New HCPCS Codes for Wheelchair Transportation/Transit Securement Systems - Correct Coding - Revised

This publication includes information about the proper coding of Wheelchair Transportation/Transit Securement Systems.
Effective for dates of service on or after April 1, 2025, CMS created two (2) new HCPCS codes for wheelchair transportation/transit securement systems:
| 1. | HCPCS Level II code E1022, “Wheelchair transportation securement system, any type includes all components and accessories” |
| 2. | HCPCS Level II code E1023, “Wheelchair transit securement system, includes all components and accessories” |
CMS determined there was a claims processing need on behalf of Medicare to help reduce the manual adjudication process by the DME MACs for existing HCPCS Level II code K0108 (WHEELCHAIR COMPONENT OR ACCESSORY, NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED) when billing for wheelchair tiedowns and occupant restraint systems.
Assignment of a HCPCS code does not necessarily indicate coverage. Refer to the applicable Medicare policy for information regarding Medicare reimbursement requirements.
| A wheelchair transportation securement system (E1022) refers to all components and accessories mounted on a wheelchair (e.g., securement-point brackets) needed to secure the wheelchair into or on a vehicle while it is being transported. |
| A wheelchair transit securement system (E1023) refers to all components and accessories mounted on a wheelchair (e.g., wheelchair-anchored pelvic/lap belt) needed to secure the beneficiary into a wheelchair during transit. |
Suppliers must not bill the K0108 miscellaneous code for devices mounted to the exterior of a motor vehicle, locking systems placed in a motor vehicle, or any securement system(s) mounted to the floor and/or side wall of a motor vehicle to stabilize a wheelchair or wheelchair and rider during transport. The correct code for billing these items is:
